We recently had a requirement for retrieving some video evidence, which had been erased from a Digital Video Recording system, for the purposes of a legal case we were working on. I had about 100GB of photos and files saved on the hard drive when the computer displayed a message asking if I wanted to use the hard drive for Nero Backup and, not thinking that this may cause any damage, I had clicked the yes option on this. After that no data was showing up on the hard drive as if it had all been erased. I recently had a failed hard drive on my Boss’s home computer. He asked if there was any way of restoring the contents of the drive. I contacted Data Recovery Ireland and followed the instructions given on the website.

I received a HDD from a colleague of mine which I couldn’t retrieve any data from. I even put it in as a slave drive on my own PC and there was absolutely nothing showing up. On our German site we have an employee clock in system that has been used by salaried and hourly paid employees for approximately 10 years. It was installed and configured by the software company on a new computer originally, and ran without problems for years.

Recently, we had a scheduled power shutdown in the Germany factory for upgrades to the electrical substation. All servers and other equipment were shutdown gracefully, except for the computer running the time collection software, which had a hard shutdown. When the power was restored we were unable to boot up the computer. The payroll had just been processed the day before, so there was no immediate urgency, but it was discovered that although the software was originally configured to back up the employee clock-in data, the target location for the backups was on the same drive. This meant that all employee data (names, employee numbers etc) would have been lost, as well as the clock in history for holiday entitlements, sick leave etc.
